Tuscany Wine Region: Grapes, Places and Traditions
Tuscany's wine country is a patchwork of hills, vineyards and towns, with different soils, elevations and local traditions. Sangiovese links many of its red wines, but the region also has white wines and other grape varieties worth exploring.

A long wine-growing history
Wine production in Tuscany reaches back to the Etruscans. Over the centuries, local practices and changing cellar techniques have shaped distinct wine areas. A name on a label can tell you about a defined place and its production rules, as well as the producer's own style.
Sangiovese and the region's other grapes
Sangiovese is central to many Tuscan reds. Its wines can suggest cherry, herbs and earthy notes, with differences between locations, vintages and producers. Trebbiano, Vernaccia and Merlot add other expressions to the regional picture.
Four names to start with
- Chianti and Chianti Classico: these are separate appellations. Chianti Classico comes from the historic area between Florence and Siena; it is not simply a quality tier within Chianti.
- Brunello di Montalcino: a Sangiovese wine from Montalcino. Its ageing potential depends on the bottle, vintage, producer and storage conditions.
- Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: a Sangiovese-based red tied to the town of Montepulciano. The place name should not be confused with the Montepulciano grape.
- Vernaccia di San Gimignano: a dry white wine that shows another side of Tuscany, made around San Gimignano from the grape of the same name.
From the cellar to the table
Producers use different combinations of steel, wood, fermentation methods and ageing. There is no single Tuscan winemaking method. To explore food pairings, try Chianti with a rich ragù or Vernaccia with fish, then adjust for the particular wine and dish.
Exploring the wine region
Choose a smaller area to explore in depth and check tasting arrangements directly with producers. A visit can help explain how vineyard conditions and cellar decisions shape the wine in your glass.
